Dubai Cares, a charitable organization that aims to provide primary education to one million children in developing countries, today provided UNICEF with nearly 1.2 million dollars to fund educational programmes in Niger. The Dubai Cares donation will benefit approximately 150,000 school children along with primary school teachers, parent teacher associations, school management committees, education civil servants and NGO’s programmes.

Elementary education is a fundamental right for all children. Biases and stereotypes prevent many children from marginalised communities prevent them from participating in or benefiting from education. Thousands of girls are either never sent to school or are forced to drop out because of poverty and traditional practice of not educating girls.

Drawing on evidence of labour conditions in India, the author, Jens Lerche, Department of Development Studies, SOAS, contends that the ILO should broaden its working definition of forced labour to encompass many of large number of modern forms, such as migrant bonded labour, which rely more on economic compulsion than extra-economic coercion and are spread relentlessly by the forces globalization.
