Country Gateways are a diverse set of organizations in more than twenty countries offering services that range from technology training to access to information for vulnerable groups. Each Country Gateway, originally created via seed funding and support from Development Gateway in one of its original programs, has a unique niche in providing information technology tools and services in its national environment. Some provide web portals with local development and ICT-related information, whereas others provide e-government, e-business, e-learning, and knowledge-sharing services. Specific services offered by Country Gateways include publishing procurement notices for government contracts, maintaining databases of development projects or directories of NGOs, and delivering e-commerce tools.
For example, in Romania, the Country Gateway supports local anti-corruption efforts. The Colombian Country Gateway, Avanza, enables greater access to education and training for youth at risk. Nepal’s Country Gateway is a partner in the local implementation of Development Gateway’s Aid Management Platform (AMP), providing technical and network support to the government’s aid management unit.
Today, the Country Gateways are independent entities, but Development Gateway continues to promote collaboration and knowledge transfer throughout the network. Development Gateway also relies on its Country Gateway partners for insights into local development challenges and opportunities, and for new ideas that can be shared elsewhere.
