Biotechnology and GMOs: The New Rice for Africa
Rice is generally associated with Asia. But it is also an integral part of the history and culture of Africa, where it has been grown for over 3000 years. There are only two species of cultivated rice in the world: Oryza sativa (Asian rice) and Oryza glaberrima (African rice). The recent spike in food prices, like other natural and human crises, is liable to harm women disproportionately. In this brief, researchers from IFPRI, an international food policy research organization, identify policy responses to the crisis tailored specifically to women’s needs, including greater involvement of women in planning and distributing food aid, agricultural assistance for female small farmers, and improved access for women to credit and markets.

Drawing on recent studies of nutrition interventions in Haiti and Guatemala, this brief identifies the optimal timing and long-term effects of interventions to improve child nutrition. Researchers from IFPRI, an international food policy research organization, conclude that improvements in maternal nutrition during pregnancy and child nutrition up to age two have a far greater positive effect on educational accomplishments and income levels than interventions later in children’s lives.

Burkina Faso's national AIDS Council has published a nutrition guide to help people living with HIV to identify nutritious local foodstuffs: guavas, cassava and cashew apples are identified as being rich in vitamins; other foods like baobab leaves, dried okra and fish are rich in iron. Besides using local produce, organisations are searching for innovative ways to provide food to vulnerable communities affected by HIV.
