The Secretary-General of OECD, Angel Gurría, and the Chair of OECD’s Development Assistance Committee, Eckhard Deutscher, have issued a call to the world’s main aid donor countries to stand by their development pledges despite the economic slowdown.

With the financial crisis spreading now to the broader economy, unemployment is rising and the threatened recession is becoming a reality. Economic activity is expected to fall by 0.9 percent in the US next year, by 0.5 percent in the Euro area and by 0.1 percent in Japan, according to the latest OECD projections.

12 indicators of aid effectiveness were developed as a way of tracking and encouraging progress against the broader set of partnership commitments. Targets for the year 2010 have been set for 11 of the indicators and are designed to encourage progress at the global level among the countries and organizations adhering to the Paris Declaration.

Under the Paris Declaration on Aid Effectiveness, donors and partner countries commit to 'reform procedures and strengthen incentives - including for recruitment, appraisal and training - for management and staff to work towards harmonization, alignment and results'.
