This report presents the finding of an eighteen month rural livelihoods monitoring and research project in Afghanistan. Afghanistan Evaluation and Research Unit conducted the project in partnership with seven other Non Governmental Organizations. The project involved 390 households spread over 21 villages in seven districts in seven provinces of Afghanistan.

As one of the least developed countries on earth, Afghanistan faces many challenges in attaining its targets for the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).

These include significant poverty, food insecurity and health risks, and what was once called 'the worst education system in the world'. In recognition of its special situation, the target date for the MDGs in Afghanistan has been put back from 2015 to 2020.

Since 2003 Switzerland has contributed around $2.5 million to support the renewed national Police force in Afghanistan.
