Donors and Developing Countries Commit to Reform Aid in Landmark Agreement

The Accra Agenda for Action calls for radical reform of international assistance. At the third high level forum in Ghana, representatives of developing countries, donors, multilateral institutions, foundations, and civil society discussed the steps necessary to realizing the goals set out in the 2005 Paris Declaration on Aid Effectiveness. The agreed reforms call for increased predictability of aid; using country systems as the primary option for the aid delivery; focusing on the national strategies of developing countries; and the further untying of aid.

Donors Commit to Increased Transparency in International Aid
In support of the Accra Agenda for Action, donors committed to increasing the transparency of aid as part of the International Aid Transparency Initiative. Ministers from developed countries were joined by heads of multilateral and bilateral funding institutions and representatives of foundations in agreement to make information on development more accessible. They promised to establish a common format for the publication of information on aid by 2010. The signatories to the accord are Australia, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Ireland, Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, United Kingdom, the European Commission, the World Bank, the United Nations Program, the GAVI Alliance, and Hewlett Foundation.
